Basic Things to do after Installing Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr

Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr is released today and you can download it from Ubuntu official site. Alternative download options are also available in the Official Site.

After installing Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, the very first step is that you need to update your repository and update all packages / softwares in Ubuntu 14.04. Issue the below commands in the terminal or use Software Updater(GUI tool) to update and upgrade it.

To Update Ubuntu 14.04 Repository

sudo apt-get update

After updating your repository, you can upgrade all your software / packages in Ubuntu 14.04 using the below command. Or you can do it later.

sudo apt-get upgrade

Once the above command is executed, your Ubuntu 14.04 Softwares will be up to date.

Next step is to Install proprietary driver in Ubuntu 14.04.

Use Additional Drivers to install the proprietary drivers (Broadcom wireless driver, NVIDIA driver). If the Additional driver failed to install it, then follow the below links to install it.

After installing the drivers. Install the Ubuntu restricted extras, which support MP3 playback, DVD playback and other video and audio formats. Restricted extras also install Microsoft fonts in Ubuntu 14.04. Use the below command to install it.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Mozilla Firefox is a Open Source web browser which is a default browser in Ubuntu 14.04. You can easily upgrade it to the latest version as I said earlier. If you have not yet updated your system packages / softwares, below command will help you to update your Firefox to the latest version 28.0.

sudo apt-get install firefox
