After installing Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr, the very first step is that you need to update your repository and update all packages / softwares in Ubuntu 14.04. Issue the below commands in the terminal or use Software Updater(GUI tool) to update and upgrade it.
To Update Ubuntu 14.04 Repository
sudo apt-get update
After updating your repository, you can upgrade all your software / packages in Ubuntu 14.04 using the below command. Or you can do it later.
sudo apt-get upgrade
Once the above command is executed, your Ubuntu 14.04 Softwares will be up to date.
Next step is to Install proprietary driver in Ubuntu 14.04.
Use Additional Drivers to install the proprietary drivers (Broadcom wireless driver, NVIDIA driver). If the Additional driver failed to install it, then follow the below links to install it.
Ubuntu restricted extras in Ubuntu 14.04
After installing the drivers. Install the Ubuntu restricted extras, which support MP3 playback, DVD playback and other video and audio formats. Restricted extras also install Microsoft fonts in Ubuntu 14.04. Use the below command to install it.
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Browser’s in Ubuntu 14.04
Mozilla Firefox is a Open Source web browser which is a default browser in Ubuntu 14.04. You can easily upgrade it to the latest version as I said earlier. If you have not yet updated your system packages / softwares, below command will help you to update your Firefox to the latest version 28.0.
sudo apt-get install firefox

GIMP 2.8 for Ubuntu 14.04
GIMP Image Editor is one of the popular open source tool, which is an powerful image manipulation program. To install the latest GIMP 2.8 in Ubuntu 14.04, issue the following command in the terminal.

While you search in Dash, Online or Amazon shopping results are also added to search results in Dash. If you dont like to have the online results on dash search then disable it or remove it. Follow the below link.

Chat in Ubuntu 14.04
Empathy is default Instant messaging application which supports different communication protocols ( Google Talk, Facebook, Yahoo, MSN, AIM, etc.,). You can easily add multiple and different chat accounts to it.
Alternate software for chat / Messenger is Pidgin Instant Messenger, its also supports various messaging clients and you can use multiple networks.
Add or Remove application icon in Unity
To add your favourite or frequently used application on Unity, just drag the application from dash and drop it in Unity. If application launcher not available then create one using the below link
To remove, just right click on the icon and chose Unlock from Launcher option.
